Good Carbs vs Bad Carbs

Good Carbs vs Bad Carbs

Let’s take a look at carbohydrates. Many people think that carbohydrates are bad for you and make you gain weight. But to generalize carbs this way is wrong and your body definitely needs carbs to function and to perform activities. Carbohydrates provide a quick source of energy. But you need to eat the “good” carbs to support your body’s function properly and without gaining weight. Examples for “good” carbs are: potatoes, rice, whole grain bread/pasta/oats, maple syrup, honey or sweet fruit. Examples for “bad” carbs are: French Fries, donuts, fruit jelly, chocolate and candy or Tortellini Alfredo. French Fries are made from potatoes but made with a lot of oil. Fruit jelly is made from fruit but usually contains high amounts of sugar and other additives such as preservatives or food flavoring. Basically, as soon as you add fat, oils, sugar and other non-natural ingredients to your “good” carbs, your “good” carbs become “bad” carbs and - especially eaten in large amounts without adequate physical exercise - will throw your body of balance and make you gain weight and have other side effects such as oily skin/hair, pimples, wrinkles, change of gut bacteria, mood swings, diabetes etc… Now, “good” carbs eaten the correct way such as boiled or oven baked potato, plain boiled rice as a side dish, a teaspoon of honey in your tea or a fresh piece of fruit will keep your body fueled for a period of time without making you gain weight or experiencing sugar crashes.
