Cardio Workouts

Cardiovascular exercises strengthen your heart and lungs, improve your endurance, burn calories, boost your mood, control your appetite and support proper blood flow in your entire body. Cardio workouts should be(come) a daily routine in your day. You don’t have to hit the treadmill for a crazy long time daily, just about 30 minutes of cardio activity each day are already beneficial. There are low intensity and high intensity and anything in between and interval and heart-rate monitoring exercises… but I am going to keep it simple here. (Please consult with a fitness trainer if you want more details and a personalized plan.) My goal here is to make you aware that it is very important to simply keep your body moving every day and to vary your exercises frequently to workout different muscle groups …and to not get bored :) . Some examples for good basic cardio exercises are:

  • walking

  • running

  • biking

  • swimming

  • dancing

  • rowing

  • skating

As a general rule it is always good to start with a warm up and some light stretching before any workout. Walk for a few minutes, circle your arms and shoulders, shake out your legs… and then start your exercise. Afterwards, do a little cool down by walking again and more stretching. Now that your muscles are warm and flexible, you can do a little deeper stretching than during your warm up. Always listen to your body and do what feels good. Challenge yourself a little bit but stop when it feels painful.
